Mixe Pot Technique: Burnishing & Fretwork Measurements: - Height: 9.8" / 25 cm - Circumference: 28.3"/ 72 cm This piece comes from high in the Sierra Norte of the State of Oaxaca, where there is a town hidden among hills, mountains & clouds, called Tlahuitoltepec. Here women play an important role in the society of the Mixe people as they are an example of organization & community activities that have broken oppression & discrimination by transmitting the art of their people through their knowledge; an example of this are objects like this vessel: a product of centuries of artistic heritage & resistance. The process of this piece begins with the collection of the clay, which has a chewy & humid consistency, accompanied by the carving of the rocks that contain the region's own minerals, which are a fundamental part of the process. Normally, this activity is carried out jointly at the family level. Subsequently, the collected clay is submerged in water for several days until it is ready to be kneaded. On the other hand, in the preparation of the collected materials are the previously worked rocks, which must undergo a slow firing of about 10 hours to facilitate the pulverization & to be added to the dough. Once the process of collecting & preparing the materials has been completed, the hands of the craftswomen begin the ritual & the creation that will give life to our piece. When finished, the piece will rest & sunbathe for a couple of days. Finally, the piece is burned in the open air & accompanied by ocote wood.
