This is an exceptional Tibetan Thangka Painting that portrays a master-quality Mahakala or Kala Bhairabha. Mahakala is a revered deity that is common to both Hinduism & Tantric Buddhism. in Buddhism, Mahakala is a fierce form of Lord Vishnu, while in Hinduism, he is a fierce manifestation of both Shiva & Vishnu & is the consort of the goddess Mahakali. Mahakala is considered a powerful guardian deity that is believed to protect people from harm & evil. Mahakala is depicted in several forms, each with distinctly different qualities & aspects. This specific painting portrays the "Black-Cloaked Mahakala," a two-armed form of Mahakala that protects the Karma. He is depicted wearing the cloak of a "warlock," which symbolizes his fierce & protective nature. This depiction of Mahakala derives from the terma of the Nyingma school & was later adopted by the Karma Kagyu during the time of the 2nd Karmapa Lama, Karma Pakshi. Mahakala is often depicted with his consort, Rangjung Gyalmo, who is also a fierce protector. While he is often thought to be the primary protector, in reality, Four-Armed Mahākāla is technically the primary protector, & Six-Armed Mahākāla is also a common Dharmapala in the Kagyu school. Mahakala is revered in Nepal, where there are many Mahakala temples & shrines. His worship is widespread in both Hinduism & Buddhism, & he is also known as Kala Bhairava or Mahakala Bhairava in Hinduism.
