About this Icon: in the year 1134 AD, Saint Neophytos was born in Lefkara, Cyprus. At an early age, he made the decision to lead a monastic life, defying the wishes of his parents. He initially traveled to the Saint Chrysostom monastery on Mount Koutsoventi, where he intended to remain & lead an austere life. With the approval of the abbot, he left for a pilgrimage to the Holy Land after performing obedience in the monastery's orchard for five years. Shortly after his brief visit, he returned to Cyprus & joined the Saint Chrysostom Monastery as a monk.He made the decision to cut out his enclosure in Pafos in September of 1159 AD, & he lived there as a hermit for forty years. He constructed his enclosure into the rocks, avoiding touch with the world, & only emerged to communicate with others on Sundays. in 1170 AD, Vasileios Kinnamos, the Bishop of Pafos, gave him his priestly ordination. The Saint passed away in advanced age. His name-bearing monastery at Pafos, Cyprus, continues to house his sacred relics. The 12th of April is devoted to honoring his memory.
