Ortelius reworked the map of the Americas in his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum in 1587. The modifications on this second edition are more significant than previously assumed, demonstrating his concern for keeping his maps as up to date as feasible. The most noticeable modification was the disappearance of the enormous bulge on South America's west coast. An eastward flowing river, maybe the Chesapeake Bay, was also added to North America's east shore. If correctly identified, this would be the first time the Chesapeake Bay appeared on a printed map.
