Charcoal ink is great for creating the strong contrast of light/shadow. Also, charcoal ink can create the subtle shades by taking advantage of ink bleeds on paper. Use of diagonal & horizontal composition is another characteristic of Suibokuga. However, the most common characteristic of Suibokuga is probably the use of empty space. Empty space allows viewers to have a breathing space to interpret. The contrast between the empty area & the painted area will become part of the metabolism of the whole art. Everyone has their own story, as well as every cell/tissue/organ in our body. With my art, I wish to celebrate life, & leave some space for curiosity that drives our search for the unknown.
