Description

A fine silver medal featuring Napoleon Bonaparte's 1811 baptism of his son Napoleon Francis Joseph Charles (1811-1832), aka Napoleon II, as the King of Rome. The medal sculptor was Bertrand Andrieu. On the reverse side are a double row of cities conquered by Napoleon, the most prominent being Paris. The French phrase in the center reads in English, "To the Emperor the good cities of the empire." The medal measures 2 5/8 inches in diameter, it is 5/16 thick & weighs 178.2 grams. It is finely detailed. It is unknown if the medal is a restrike, although it dates to the 19th century. The silver tests at a higher purity than sterling, as evidenced in the last photo showing the bright red color brought out by the acid on the touchstone.
