Most Greek city-state citizens with sufficient means were expected to equip themselves & make themselves available for the role when necessary. Hoplites played a crucial role in Greek warfare, especially in the victories of Greek armies over Persia at the Battle of Marathon (plate number 1) & the Battle of Plataea (plate number 2) during the Greco-Persian Wars.
