As a young student, he actively participated in the Hungarian revolt of 1956 & ended up in prison. When he was released, he managed to get to Austria, where he happened to meet Olof Palme, who was in Vienna at a youth conference. Josef began his studies at the Art Academy in Vienna before coming to Sweden with Olof Palme's help. Josef entered the Konstfackskolan in Stockholm. During his studies there, he received a scholarship to study painting at the Beaux Arts in Paris. After completing his studies at Konstfack, with the help of his teacher Stig Lindberg, he got a job as chief designer at Söholms Keramikfabrik on Bornholm. He was connected to this for many years and, in addition to designing functional ceramics, had many opportunities to work with artistic decoration in e.g. schools & hospitals.
