Surimono are privately published woodblock prints, usually commissioned by individual poets or poetry groups as a form of New Year's greeting card. The poems, most commonly kyōka (witty thirty-one-syllable verse), inscribed on the prints usually include felicitous imagery connected with spring, which in the lunar calendar begins on the first day of the first month. Themes of surimono are often erudite, frequently alluding to Japanese literary classics in both texts & images. Unlike the more famous ukiyo-e, which were produced with the intention of being distributed as widely as possible, surimono were privately published works, used for gifts or sometimes for making announcements, & were almost never sold to the general public. Original Medium: woodcut - ink, colors on paper: Reproduction Medium - Textured, Fine Art Paper & colored pigment inks Image Size: 13 x 11.35 inches printed on larger paper to allow ample borders for matting & framing Prints ship in a heavy protective cardboard tube. the giclee process produces a high quality, fine art reproduction from a high-resolution digital file of an image. The file is then printed with a high-resolution photo generation printer on a fine art paper. Most artists & working photographers today use the giclee process to produce reproductions of their original artwork & photographs. As with any original art or fine art reproduction, it is recommended that prints are framed & displayed under glass to prevent color fade or shift over the years.
