Although the Ancient Greeks themselves used helmet types with better visibility in combat, they still depicted their heroes wearing these helmets. This helmet was made of bronze & in its later styles, it covered the entire head & neck, with slits for the eyes & mouth. A large curved projection also protected the nape of the neck. Greek hoplites wore helmets tipped upward for comfort when not in combat. You can view the original Corinthian helmets in museums around the world, but the prototypes can be found in the Olympia Museum in Greece. The griffin is a legendary creature with the body, tail, & back legs of a lion, & the head & wings of an eagle. It also has eagle talons as its front feet. The griffin was considered an especially powerful & majestic creature, as the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts & the eagle, the king of the birds. Griffins are known for their ability to guard treasure & priceless possessions. A hoplite was the most common type of heavily armed foot soldier in ancient Greece from the 7th to 4th centuries BCE. Most ordinary citizens of Greek city-states with sufficient means were expected to equip & make themselves available for the role when necessary. Hoplites played an instrumental role in Greek warfare & were key to the victories of Greek armies over Persia at the Battle of Marathon (490 BCE) & the Battle of Plataea (479 BCE) during the Greco-Persian Wars. All our bronze items are cast in Greece, using the traditional 'lost wax' method. Since nothing is mass-produced, there may be slight variations in patination & coloring. This makes each piece unique.
