I am already fascinated by this specimen just based upon its botryoidal (bubbly) habit (see photos). But as if that wasn't enough, this thing glows an incredible lime green in UV light! My friend jokingly calls these "glopals" (glowing opals). Opal is a hydrated silica mineral. Precious opal & common opal differ in how well-organized the silica spheres are on the microscopic level. Perfectly aligned spheres create the iridescence found in precious opal. But common opal with neat UV reactivity is awesome too. A great addition to any mineral collection!
