Description

Saint Luke the Evangelist ( Λουκάς, o Ευαγγελιστής ), hand painted Greek Orthodox Byzantine icon, entirely hand made on canvas with crocus, set in a gold leaf gilded background. It is in accord with the style the tradition & the criteria of the Macedonian school of Agio Oros ( Mount Athos ). Luke the Evangelist is one of the Four Evangeliststhe four traditionally ascribed authors of the canonical gospels. The Early Church Fathers ascribed to him authorship of both the Gospel of Luke & the Acts of the Apostles, which would mean Luke contributed over a quarter of the text of the New Testament, more than any other author. It is believed that Luke was a Greek physician who lived in the Greek city of Antioch in Ancient Syria. His feast day is celebrated on June 11.
