Grand Tour plaster intaglio depicting St Teresa, "The Little Flower". Made of plaster, the intaglio measures 2" diameter. We are offering the intaglio with or without a gold leaf edge (make selection in drop down menu). These miniature relief carvings were originally made as souvenirs from what was known as the Grand Tour, a traditional right of passage for the educated in the 17th & 18th centuries. Our religious themed intaglios are custom made from molds that are made from authentic antique 19th century European Grand Tour intaglios. Intaglios are so much fun to collect & hang in groupings on a wall, or display on an easel in a special place. The intaglios can be used for a variety of decorating purposes, the most common being framed. These timeless pieces add elegance & intrigue to any room, & can continue to be a source of conversation for years to come. Historically, intaglios were carved from hard gemstones to create wax seals. As far back as the Roman Empire, prominent individuals had their own personal intaglios for authenticating documents & letters. Intaglio is an Italian word that means engrave. in Italian, it is pronounced /in'-TAL-yo/, the "g" being silent. in modern English language, however, it is more commonly pronounced /in-TAG-lee-o/.
