Description

This beautiful decorative plate was made in Karlsbad, Western Germany by JOSEF KUBA. JOSEF KUBA decorated porcelain from 1930-1989. Based on the mark on the back of this plate, it was created at some time between 1952 & 1972. This plate is white with fuchsia pink & is gilded with real gold. The center & outer edge feature scenes from the famous paintings by Jean Honore' Fragonard (1732-1806). Fragonard was a French painter of the Rococo style who was popular in the latter half of the 18th Century, around the time of Marie Antoinette, Louis XV, & Louis XVI. Rococo painters featured pastoral landscapes & incorporated in their paintings myths of love, cherubs, cupids, Venus, & mythical creatures. Portraiture was very popular among the Rococo painters & featured aristocratic courting couples on leisurely outings. Although most couples appear to be innocent courting lovers, some works of the Rococo painters depict a little naughtiness in their pastoral scenes. Scenes, like those found on this plate, are commonly called Fragonard's Love Story or Fragonard's Courting Couples. Even though the French Revolution put an end to many of the careers of Rococo painters, as their aristocratic patrons could no longer support them, this was not the end of the Fragonard Love Story or Courting Couples, which have continued as a popular motif to this day. This plate measures 10-1/2" in diameter & is in excellent, pre-owned condition with no damage. NOTE: The stand used to photograph the plate is NOT included. Also, due to the metals used in the decoration, this plate is not suitable for food service. Josef Kuba Fragonard's Love Story 10-1/2" Gilded Plate
