He fought during the Cristero Wars in Mexico when the oppressive atheistic Mexican government began brutally persecuting Catholics there. He was captured by governmental forces, refused to give up his faith, & was shot & killed at the age of 15. The Feast of Saint José Sánchez del Río is celebrated on February 10th. Saint José Sánchez del Río is the patron saint of children, persecuted Christians, & the Mexican city of Sahuayo.
