Small Bronze Spartan Shield-Aspis Hoplon bearing the Capital Lambda Λ, Symbol of the Lacedaemonians-King Leonidas-Ancient Greece-Marble Base Details: Condition: New, Handmade in Greece Material: Pure Bronze Diameter of shield: 27 cm(10.6 inches) Weight including marble base: 3.2 kg Leonidas the Brave was a Greek hero-king of Sparta, the 17th of the Agiad line, third son of Anaxandridas 2 of Sparta who was believed to be a descendant of Heracles, possessing much of the latter's strength & bravery. Leonidas (who died 480 BC) stands against the invading Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece is one of the enduring tales of Greek heroism, invoked throughout Western history as the epitome of bravery exhibited against overwhelming odds. The Spartan army stood at the center of the Spartan state, whose citizens' primary obligation was to be good soldiers. Subject to military drills from infancy, the Spartans were one of the most feared military forces in world history. At the height of Sparta's power - between the 6th & 4th centuries BCE - it was commonly accepted that "one Spartan was worth several men of any other state."
