CHATHAM'S TWIN LIGHTS, Chatham, Massachusetts - Colorized Old Photo of the Lighthouse as it was circa 1900. Two light towers are better than one! At least that was the prevailing wisdom at the Chatham Life Saving station until 1923, when an excess tower was relocated approximately 12 miles north to become Nauset Light. This is a reproduction print of an antique Drawing/plan of Chatham Light as it stood in 1841. The brick towers in this drawing were replacements for the original (1808) wooden towers that had deteriorated to the point of being unsafe to ascend. Unfortunately, in terms of longevity, the brick structures did not fare any better. The south tower crumbled into the sea due to coastal erosion on December 15, 1879 & the north tower followed 15 months later. At that time, they had already been replaced by cast iron towers, lit in 1877. This image is printed on heavy matte fine art paper with archival inks. Framing is available.
