Description

19th c. French hand-painted gouache on paper textile design. The pattern is for a jacquard woven fabric, & these designs are sometimes called "check papers" for the tiny grid printed on the paper. One of a kind item, on heavy linen rag paper. From the archives of a 19th c. textile manufacturer in Roubaix, France. Many have notes on the back about the client the design was made for, the weaves & dyes, often with a date. I bought the archive in its entirety in 1995 in France, & shipped it all back in a crate. I sold some of the designs to design archives in the US, then stored the rest in my attic for the past 27 years. Many are complete patterns, but not all. Some of the patterns repeat on the standard staggered design, while others are very tricky, using a mirror-image reverse. Often this latter type is indicated with an arrow inked in at the margin. This design is for a scenic tapestry. It is one of the earliest ones in my collection. Image size is 28" x 25". One piece. Has some small areas of damage & small repairs. Edges may have wear or small tears. Ships rolled in a tube. 19Th C. French Tapestry Design
