Description
This exotic stamp box is a Chinese export piece from the early 1900s. The lid is carved from a solid piece of nephrite or serpentine, skillfully sculpted to a fine tracery of flowers. The box is beautifully crafted of chased bronze that was gilt, the gold sheen giving it the feel of a jeweled object. The simple geometry of the box contrasts w the rich texture of the ornate bronze metal work & the intricately carved stone vegetation. The pierced stone of the lid is backed with glass, a practical adaptation to create an enclosed space while permitting the illusion of open work in the stone. Marks: The box is stamped China on the bottom. Approximate Measurements: Height: 1 7/16" Width: 3 1/16" Depth (front to back): 1 3/8" Condition: The piece is in excellent condition for its age, with no damage & only minor surface wear, particularly to the gilding.
