Description

This Turkish Drop Spindle created by Riley Wood & Fiber Art is Mini size & completely handmade from only the finest ethically sourced domestic, & tropical species in both hard & soft woods. A Turkish Drop Spindle is a wonderful way to create your own handspun yarn. It is a type of suspended spindle that hangs from the fiber as you spin. It has a shaft & two interlocking arms that make a whorl at the bottom. Spinning with a Turkish Drop Spindle is a relaxing & enjoyable activity that can produce beautiful & unique yarns. You can experiment with different fibers, colors, & techniques to create your own custom blends. You can also use your handspun yarn for knitting, crocheting, weaving, or other crafts. A Turkish Drop Spindle is a simple but versatile tool that can help you unleash your creativity & express yourself through Fiber Art. The yarn is wound around the arms as you spin, creating a center-pull ball that can be easily removed when you are done. A Turkish Drop Spindle is super easy to use, ultra-portable, & really fun! The cross pieces or "whorl" of this Mini Turkish Drop Spindle is handmade from Cherry & the shaft is hand turned from Chechen. This spindle weighs approximately 6.74 grams. The cross pieces or "whorl" is 2.5" or 6cm wide overall. That goes for both small & large pieces of the whorl. Both pieces are exactly the same thickness & width. When unassembled the small piece nests almost perfectly with the larger one. The shaft is roughly 3.5" or 9cm long. Turkish Drop Spindles are very fun to spin fiber with! For someone just learning, this type of spindle is absolutely ideal. Because you can literally stop the spindle, (without fear of losing your twist), & "park & draft", as it's called. This method is best for beginners all the way to someone learning to add embellishing or making novelty yarn. I spend close to 2 hours with each spindle making sure they are Heirloom Quality. Ensuring great balance, & a spinning experience that's unlike any other. To use a Turkish drop spindle, you need to attach a leader yarn to the shaft & wind it around the arms in a crisscross pattern. (typically, under one, over two). Then, you can draft some fiber from a rolag, roving, or batt & join it to the leader. You can spin the spindle either clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on the direction of the twist you want. As you spin, you can "park" the spindle between your knees or under your arm or let it sit on a table, to control the tension & "draft" more fiber. When you have a length of yarn, you can wind it around the arms, following the same crisscross pattern as the leader. This way, you can build up a ball of yarn on the spindle that can be easily taken off when you are finished. All of my spindles, unless otherwise noted, are finished with an eco-friendly Danish oil. Fine sanded, applied, sanded, & reapplied, if necessary. Leaving an almost silk feel to the essentially natural wood. I'm happy to share a M.S.D.S if you'd like. I do reuse
