Description
This is an antique mid-1800s, miniature, travel, brass, gold scale in original, wood box. It is unmarked (perhaps English) & measures 1 inch by 2 inches by 5.5 inches in size. The set includes a metal balance bar, 2 brass nesting cups, 2 brass flat plates & 4 square brass measuring weights. Each side of the balance bar would have been connected through the flat-plate holes by strings which have deteriorated over time. There might also be some missing parts, but I don't know as I was not around during the gold-rush to have used one. The box appears to me to be hand-carved of mahogany wood & has a notched out place for all the individual parts-n-pieces. The box operates with tiny, brass hinges & the tiny weights have their own brass-hinged compartment. The box fastens on the outside with 2 bone, toggle hooks. There are paper remnants on the inside of the lid which probably originally had the manufacturers, advertising label. Nice piece. There is rust & pitting to the metal & brass pieces, but you would too if you were this old. Overall not too bad in my opinion, but the photos tell all.
