Corinth Drachma Handcrafted Silver Pendant - Aphrodite & Mythical Winged Horse Pegasus Flying - Ancient Greek Coin Ancient Corinth lay at the intersection of two worlds, Rome to the west, & Asia to the east. Its two large harbors facilitated the passage of sailors & merchants as they traveled the seas & moved their goods from place to place. Because of its prime location, Corinth became the stopping point for many commercial travelers in ancient times. As a result, the city became rich from the trade that occurred there. Despite being destroyed in 146 B.C, Corinth again rebounded to prominence as a commercial center following its refounding by Julius Caesar in 44 B.C. Sometime in the third Century B.C. Corinth also became home to a coin mint. The striking of coins at Corinth continued for nearly five hundred years, eventually ceasing after the reign of Septimius Severus in 211 A.D. Like many ancient Mediterranean cities, Corinth was also home to several significant temples. Several temples are depicted on Roman-period coins produced at Corinth's mint. One of them left Corinth with an enduring reputation. It stood atop the 575m rock outcrop called Acrocorinth that loomed over the city. That temple was dedicated to Aphrodite the 'goddess of love ' & beauty, identified with Venus by the Romans. Aphrodite was significant among the deities worshiped at Corinth. Various depictions of the goddess feature prominently on coins struck at the Corinth mint during the early Greek period before 146 B.C. Most coins minted in Corinth show Pegasus, the winged horse tamed by the Corinthian hero Bellerophon assisted by the goddess Athena. According to the legend, Bellerophon in his effort to tame Pegasus, fell asleep near Athena's altar. Athena came in a vision in his sleep & gave him a golden bridle. When Bellerophon woke up, he found near him this golden bridle, & with it, he tamed Pegasus. This pendant is handmade in Greece, in 925 sterling silver.
