Description

This soft, dreamy landscape of a person running along a canal chasing after a boat is such an intriguing delight! I can't tell where it occurs in time or space, much less whether the boat is coming or going. The colors are so ridiculously rich that the painting appears to glow from within in bright light! This painting is oil paint with a light glossy varnish on a canvas panel that's been trimmed down a little unevenly to about 18" by 8". The painting is in good condition overall but it does have errant paint speckles & streaks, tiny bits of dried paint & paintbrush bristles caught up in the surface, dark grayish speckles & scratches of discoloration from friction, lower paint levels (in color & texture) that can be seen through the upper levels, many speckles of unpainted (but primed) canvas throughout, a slightly flattened appearance to some of the thicker areas of paint from the painting being pressed against another hard object before fully dry, a chunkier than average canvas weave, & tiny pinprick-sized popped air bubbles trapped in some of the thicker areas of paint. The finish is mostly glossy & satin with some areas that are more matte from the varnish wearing thin or being lightly applied. The painting is signed, "JM Hall" on the back (and I blocked out some personal info that I think is probably fine to leave uncovered but I decided to err on the side of caution). The painting has a retro look, but it's contemporary. The vintage carved wooden frame is covered with a metallic gold paint on the inner & outer lips & edges with a glossy warm brownish thinned paint or pigment (with coppery undertones) in the creases & has an inner lip that I think has a faux woodgrain (mimicking a whitish wood stain or whitewash) finely printed wrap in cream & tan & light brown (with a warm cream colored look overall with pinkish, peachy, or yellowish undertones depending on the light) with a glossy varnish overall. It's in decent condition overall but it does read a bit more "shabby chic" or "rustic" overall due to its color variations, small chips & scratches & dents (some of which reveal the lower paint levels or the bare wood beneath), a prominent wood grain pattern & and texture that show through the paint, dark gray speckles of discoloration from friction, tiny nail heads at the outer corners, many tiny bits of dust or dried bits of paint or sawdust or tiny popped air bubbles caught up in the surface of the paint within the creases of the wood, & extra wear at the outer corners definitely make it read more as "shabby chic" or "rustic" overall. The frame increases the overall dimensions to 20 9/16" by 10 1/2". I tried to capture the painting in as many light conditions as possible so you can see how its appearance varies based on the lighting. This painting's color can appear much cooler, bolder, & darker in low lights & warmer, softer, & more colorful in bright light. The painting may actually appear a bit more warm, soft, & colorful (with the green
