Icon with water-gilding on natural linden wood. The wood has been prepared in heat & gilded with gold leaf 24K, in accordance with traditional Byzantine techniques. The icon has been painted with egg-tempera paints for best performance & endurance of colors used. The colors were chosen based on studies & analyses of older icons by renowned iconographers from Mountain Athos.The gilded surface of the icon has been further decorated with hand-engravings (tsoukaniko). About this Icon: The "first after the One" has been said to be the apostle Paul. Saul was his Hebrew name, & he at first actively participated in the persecution of Christians. However, after seeing Christ, Paul committed his life to serving God. He wrote 14 epistles to the various churches, including the Church of Greece, many of which he personally helped form. He was beheaded as a kind of martyrdom, & on June 29th, he is honored alongside the Apostle Peter.
