Icon with water-gilding on natural linden wood. The wood has been prepared in heat & gilded with gold leaf 24K, in accordance with traditional Byzantine techniques. The icon has been painted with egg-tempera paints for best performance & endurance of colors used. The colors were chosen based on studies & analyses of older icons by renowned iconographers from Mountain Athos.The gilded surface of the icon has been further decorated with hand-engravings (tsoukaniko). About this Icon: The revered & affluent parents of Saint Symeon the New Theologian gave birth to him in Galata, Paphlagonia, around 949 A.D. Having met a monk from the famed Monastery of Stoudion at an early age, Symeon afterwards referred to him as his spiritual father. Later, he visited the Saint Mamas Monastery, where Abbot Anthony was in charge. He was tonsured a monk there two years later. After a while, the abbot of the monastery passed away. Saint Symeon, who had been called to the priesthood, took over as abbot with the support of the other monks & the blessing of Patriarch Nicholas Chrysoberges.Due to his high reputation, the Saint had issues with the Metropolitan of Nicomedia & Chancellor of the Patriarch, Stephanos. The Saint served as abbot for 25 years. He retired to a hermitage next to the abandoned fortress of Chrysopolis, across from the monastery known as Palouketon, in the year 1005 AD. Later, he retired to the Saint Marina Monastery. in 1022 AD, he passed away in peace. His memory is honored on October 12th.
