Description

Presented is a rare & superb condition German silver tumbler style cup. This piece dates to circa 1625-1683, & was made in Augsburg. The cup is made in a simple, classic form, low & rounded with a molded rim, which is sometimes called a palm cup or Faustbecher. The interior has a light gold wash. The underside of the cup has a German hallmark for the city of Augsburg, as well as a maker's mark of IB. in Marc Rosenberg's Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen, there are two listings for an Augsburg maker with an IB mark in this shape. The first appears on mostly religious silver objects circa 1625-1630, but there is no name attributed. The second, also without an attributed name, likewise crafted mostly religious items with dates circa 1677-1683. There is also a zigzag mark where the cup was assay tested at some point in the past. This piece is tested & guaranteed at least 800 purity silver. This piece is in great condition, particularly considering the age. There is some minor wear to the gold wash interior, but it is mostly intact, just light. There are no dents, no splits, no monograms, no monogram removals, & no repairs. The cup measures about 2 inches tall at the rim & about 2 7/8 inches in diameter. This piece weighs 62.6 grams or 2.2 regular ounces. -jm Incredible Rare C1625-1683 Augsburg German Silver Faustbecher Tumbler Cup
