Description

Desmond Tutu is a print from the original painting by Marcy Hall, part of the Abbey of the Arts Dancing Monk Series. Each vivid print is on acid free, archival quality matte photo paper & measures 5"x10" & is mounted on a 11"x14" matte. The print is hand-signed & titled on the matte. Desmond Tutu, shown here in his traditional fuchsia vestments, was a South African Anglican bishop & theologian known for his work as an anti-apartheid & human rights activist. He served as Bishop of Johannesburg & Archbishop of Cape Town (you can see Cape Town's Table Mountain in the background), in both cases being the first black African to hold the position. Following apartheid's fall, Tutu campaigned for gay rights & spoke out on a wide range of controversial subjects. in this painting, Tutu holds a protea flower, an indigenous flower of South Africa, which represents beauty, the aesthetic harmony of all its cultures, & South Africa flowering as a nation. The Dancing Monk series is a collaboration between Pennsylvania painter Marcy Hall of Rabbit Room Arts, & author Christine Valters Paintner of Abbey of the Arts, a virtual monastery based in Ireland.
