Our Lady of Mount Carmel ready to frame print -¬† The Carmelite order formed in the 12th century, as some Europeans who had traveled to the Holy Land during the crusades retreated to the wilderness of Mount Carmel to devote themselves to prayer & give up power & war. The monks lived in caves & huts on the mountain (the same mountain on which Elija had lived & striven with the priests of Baal. They considered Our Lady to be their special patron & spoke of her as Our Lady of This Place. The order spread from the Holy Land to Europe, but retained their devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Saint Simon Stock experienced a vision of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in which she presented to him the brown scapular & promised that those who died wearing the scapular would be saved. The brown scapular became a part of the Carmelite habit, & it has become a popular devotion to this day. The feast day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is July 16th. This icon was written for the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart in Alhambra, CA for the 80th anniversary of their retreat house. Our Lady is seen in Carmelite attire, holding the Christ Child. Both are crowned, & each holds a scapular, a reminder of St. Simon Stock‚Äôs vision & of Our Lady‚Äôs promise to those who wear the scapular. The original icon is decorated with eighty hand-sculpted roses covered in 24 karat gold, commemorating the eighty years of the Carmelite retreat center‚Äôs history. Ready to frame print.
