Earlier versions from 1705 included only rosemary while later versions included orrice root, lavender, musk, fine wine, mint or sage. We grow many of the herbs used for this recipe (rosemary, chamomile, calendula, lavender) on our farm & feel good knowing the ingredients are not only organic but go into a wonderful historical recipe such as this. Our own witch hazel is used as a base & slow solar infused (2 months) with some truly wonderful herbs including our farm-grown lemon balm, farm-grown lavender, farm-grown chamomile, rose petal, farm-grown calendula, wild foraged pine, lemon peel, rosemary, sage, farm-grown peppermint, elderflower, & helichrysum. Please Note: Along with our own witch hazel this is made with apple cider vinegar according to the original recipe, it does have a vinegar smell but this does disappear quickly. A bit of history: The uses of Queen of Hungary water were many promising one a youthful complexion, cheering the spirits, heart, & brain when drunk & even a cure for rheumatic pain & gout. The history of Hungary water is a bit complicated with many versions being passed down through the ages. Originally thought to be formulated by a monk for Queen Elisabeth of Poland as a headache remedy, it has since been assumed it was instead compounded during the period of the black plague. Natural herbal properties lent to helping those who inhaled its scent through handkerchiefs & applied to affected areas. Another version of its start is found in the 14th century for Queen Isabella of Hungary, who terrified about losing her beauty, ordered a court chemist to formulate this beauty fluid. With the wonder of Hungary Water & at the ripe old age of 70, the queen was asked for her hand in marriage by a 25-year-old Duke. The popularity of Hungary water soon spread throughout Europe when Charles V of France, famous for his love of fragrance, was gifted a bottle. Heading into the 18th century it became the most popular fragrance only being sidelined by Eau de Cologne.
