Description

In 1802, some reconstruction work was being done to the tomb of St. Priscilla in her catacombs in Rome when the workers discovered a previously unknown ancient burial vault. The tomb had an inscription, Pax Tecum Filumena - Peace be with you, Philomena. It contained the bones of an adolescent girl. The tiles of her tomb showed Christian symbols: two anchors, three arrows, a palm leaf, & a lily. The first three symbols of martyrdom, the last of purity. in 1805, her bones were placed in a church at Muginano, Italy, & that's when the miracles began to occur. St. John Vianney was devoted to Philomena, & he credited her as being the one responsible for all the miracles he performed. There were so many healings & other miracles associated with Philomena that Pope Gregory XVI declared her, "The Wonder Worker." She was canonized in 1837 & was an immensely popular Saint in the 19th Century & is still popular today. Philomena is a patron saint of infants, babies, & youth. Feast day is August 11. (source: www.catholic.org) This lithograph was done by our favorite holy card company, Bouasse Lebel, we think about 1870 or 1880, during the height of devotion to Philomena. They made it a rare full-sized print, emphasizing in the artwork the dignity & the power of our Wonder Worker. The stories about her relics & her life are very interesting, & you may wish to delve deeper. IMPORTANT THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a white border of about 0.5" inch for 5x7", 1.3" for 8.5x11", or 1.6" for 11x14" pictures. All Approx! Fine art printers do this because the images are almost never the same rectangular ratio of the standard paper sizes. It also gives the prints a finished look, & lets them look good in a frame without a matt. - Acid-free paper - Archival pigments, rated to last for generations. - Cardboard backer - Above story of the art - Enclosed in a tight-fitting, crystal clear bag.
