Description

A great collectible apothecary scale weight set Nuremberg Germany Pre-metric insert weights also called pot weights or cup weights, have been around for 2000 years. From the 15th century onwards, they were made mainly by the masters of the "Nuremberg Redsmiths". The export of brassware made the city famous throughout Europe. The quality of their workmanship remained unsurpassed until the end of the 18th century. Apart from Nuremberg, working weights were produced in large quantities in France, Austria & England. Few in Italy, Sweden & other countries. The weight to which these scales were calibrated is not always an indication of the country of manufacture. They were needed wherever goods were traded, weighed & declared. Maker's marks are known from the city archives of Nuremberg & today often allow very accurate age & maker determinations, calibration marks provide information about the use of weights. Premetric weights are usually made in pounds, lots, marks, ducats or crowns.
