This is a very nice set of two vintage 1987 & 1988 Burroughs Wellcome Company handmade limited edition Delft souvenir pharmacy pill tiles wall plaques made in Holland. Pill tiles were used in the past to prepare medications & were awarded to pharmacists when they completed their training. Each blue & white tile features a detailed vintage apothecary scene featuring pharmacists at work, with an elegant columned arch decorated with unicorns around the perimeter. Attached to the back of the tiles is a paper describing the science of pharmacy, the pharmacist's job, the "doctrine of the four humours" & an explanation of the pill tiles. The plaques measure approximately 5 7/8" square & come ready to hang with a metal hook attached to the top. They are in good vintage condition with surface wear including scratches, staining & small chips on a few corners (please see last picture). 2 Vintage 1987 & 1988 Burroughs Wellcome Co.
