Stunning Early Wooden Sign in the shape of a Whale that reads " The First Sunday School PRIME HOUSE 1797 " Fantastic Crazed / Painted Surface with lots of personality on this double sided sign. Large Size measuring approx 34'' x 13'' & is a thick 1 1/4''. Two hangers at top for easy hanging. The home served as the manse of the local Presbyterian Church. Built in 1797 , the house takes its name from Nathaniel Prime, who became the church's pastor in 1806. He also wrote an early history of Long Island. Also interesting that it is in the shape of a whale. During the American Revolution the area served as a strategic fort for the British but it was ultimately destroyed by Yankee Militia. As a component of what became known as the whale boat wars which were a series of unofficial raids against the British during the revolution Zoom up & notice details, age, wear, marks etc. I would say the sign is an earlier sign & at least from the 1940s if not earlier.
