He was a pious youth & a good friend of St. Dominic. At the young age of 16 he became a Dominican. Eventually he became the prior of St. Marks & reluctantly, Bishop of Florence. in this capacity, he was a reformer, theologian, confessor, & spiritual director & established a lay society known as "Good Men of St. Martin" which gave assistance to the poor.
