Highly collectible vintage sterling silver fruit spoon crafted by Tilden Thurber & Co. of Providence, Rhode Island commemorating Christopher Columbus. This would be a very prized & special gift for someone who collects things relating to American history or Christopher Columbus specifically. The spoon bowl has beautiful lines & contours & comes to a distinct point to eat a grapefruit or other fruit. Spoon handle is rich with detail & reads 'CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS', & the top of the handle is decorated with books, a compass, flowers & a likeness of Columbus. There's something really special about this spoon. The degree of detail is very impressive. It's a bit of Americana you can hold in your hand, & it feels substantial weighing in at 29.3 grams. in excellent vintage condition with some light signs of age. Measures about 6" in length. Rear of handle bears his flagship vessel the Santa Maria along with flowers & an anchor. 'STERLING TILDEN THURBER & CO.' is stamped on the back of the handle. Tilden Thurber was founded in 1880 by Henry T. Brown, Henry Tilden, & Gorham Thurber. William H. Thurber was added as partner in 1885. They incorporated in 1892, and, sadly almost exactly 100 years later in 1991 they filed for bankruptcy. Please refer to each photo.
