Here is a wonderful piece of Vermont history! It is a large portfolio of 14" x 17" black & white photographs of two buildings at the University of Vermont in Burlington. The cover of the portfolio says "The Williams & Converse Buildings - The University of Vermont - The Gift of Edward Higginson Williams - John Heman Converse - Heliotype Printing Company, Boston, Mass." There are a total of twelve (12) loose photos in the portfolio. I don't know if there were more in the set at one time. This is how it was found. Some are interior pictures & some are exterior architectural scenes of the beautiful buildings. Converse Hall was built in 1895 & Williams Hall was built in 1896. There was a little piece of paper that says "Calendar on the wall reads 1896" in the portfolio. Edward Higginson Williams died in 1899, so this must date between 1896 & 1899. There is no date of publication anywhere. The black & white photos are in very nice condition. The edges do have some chipping & little creases & discolorations on the edges. Some have smudges & signs of being handled. There are no large creases or stains. One has a scuff on the picture. This set was the property of the Rutland Library at one time & it is stamped "Discard" near the label inside the front cover. A few photos do have a light stamp in the corner that says "Rutland Free Library". The size of the photographs are all the same, measuring 8" x 10", plus the title underneath. So, printed area is 9" x 10". These would be wonderful if they were matted & framed. Luckily the photographs were protected well. The back cover has more stains. There are strings on the right edge to tie it together, but the front sting is mostly gone now. There is no odor.
