Whistler's Venice series was known for its break from traditional scene composition as he focused on lesser known subjects & scenes. During his one trip to Italy, spanning fifteen months in Venice between 1879 & 1880, Whistler produced numerous works, small paintings, and, two sets of prints that were later published in London. The composition of this etching is considered one of Whistler's best from the time. & one of only a few that weren't scenes in Venice.
