Vintage rare 1915 Portugal ten cent coin spoon. Both the handle & the coin are 835 silver. The detail in this Portugal souvenir spoon is really impressive. Makes for a wonderful coin collector gift. Also a nice gift item for someone who collects things relating to Portugal or to Portuguese culture. The front of the finial is the Cross of the Portuguese Order of Christ (also known as the Cross of Portugal) with a crown atop it accented with enamel. The detail in the crown is just gorgeous. The one side of the coin, designed by Simões de Almeida in 1911, was originally designed for Portugal's 20 & 50 cent pieces. A left-facing bust of the Effigy of the Republic appears in the center. A Phrygian cap & three stalks of grain cover her head. The reverse of the coin features the coat of arms of Portugal in its center. There are two maker's marks on the stem that I cannot make out. See last photo. in very good vintage condition. 3.25" in length. Interesting historic note... The Portuguese Order of Christ was founded in 1319. The Order of Christ, led by Prince Henry the Navigator, was a leading developer of the Portuguese discoveries. Because of this, the Christ Cross was used on the sails of the Portuguese ships involved in the exploration of the seas. The emblem was forever associated with the Portuguese discoveries, making it one of the main symbols of the Portuguese Overseas Empire. Today, the Cross of Christ is present in many flags & emblems of Portugal & Brazil. Examples are the flags of the city of São Paulo & the Portuguese Autonomous Region of Madeira, the coat of arms of several Portuguese & Brazilian cities & municipalities, the badges of the Portuguese & Brazilian national football teams & the roundels of the Portuguese Air Force aircraft.
