Description

Victorian Footman, Ca. 1890, in all original condition, used to warm plates & or food in front of the fire, The footman is a British term for a metal stand, usually of polished steel or brass, & either oblong or oval in shape, for keeping plates & dishes hot before a dining room fire. A footman was useful prior to the early 20th century, before hot water was easily obtained, & when open fires were common. Brass Footmans were used by the Georgians & Victorians through the 19th Century as Fireside Plate Warmers where before a meal a 'Footman' (House Servant, hense the name) would place the Brass Footman beside the Dining Room Fire to warm the family & dinner guests plates. I have not polished this! This will shine like new if you do, Measures 16" W x 11" D x 11" H Antique Brass & Iron Victorian Footman, Ca. 1890
