Vintage sterling silver Alaska Totem Pole souvenir demitasse spoon. Made by Joseph Mayer & Bros. of Seattle, WA. Makes a fantastic gift for anyone who has traveled to Alaska & wants a memento to remind them of their visit. Also a great addition to any spoon collector's collection. The front of the handle is decorated in great detail with raised relief totem pole style work. The winged figure at the top of the spoon is a unique design feature. The rear of the handle has 'ALASKA TOTEM POLE' running vertically down the handle. It is also stamped with the world 'STERLING' as well as the makers hallmark of the pick ax & shovel crisscrossed with the initials N. & S. in nice vintage condition. Measures approximately 4" in length. A bit of background on the maker... Joseph Mayer & Bros. was in business from about 1895 to 1945. Joseph & his brothers, Albert & Marcus, emigrated from Germany & established a business in Seattle, Washington, in about 1895. Albert & Marcus moved to Dawson City, Yukon, in 1897 during the Gold Rush & opened a jewelry store. When they came back to Seattle a few years later, Joseph Mayer & Bros. changed its mark from a fleur-de-lis in a triangle to a pick ax & shovel mark (the same mark that is found on this item), representing the brothers' Gold Rush venture. Various versions of the mark were used, & the pick & shovel changed positions. The company made souvenir spoons, sterling silver flatware, hollowware, & jewelry for wholesalers. in 1920, the business was split. Albert & Marcus established Mayer Brothers Wholesale Jewelry Co. Joseph continued to manufacture as Joseph Mayer, Inc. His company eventually became E. J. Towle Manufacturing Co. Please refer to each photo.
