Solid sterling silver brooch. Bjørn Sigurd Østern (1935-2023) for David-Andersen, Oslo, Norway. 1962. Marked: D-A (David Andersen company mark) NORWAY STERLING 925 S (=sterling) INV. B.S.Ø. (=inventor Bjørn Sigurd Østern) Height: 36 mm/ca 1,5 inches Width: 43 mm/ca 1,7 inches Weight: 23 grams Scandinavian Mid-century modern, sophisticated, geometric design. A sought after collector's item, as well as a nice piece to wear. The brooch was honored in a jewelry design competition organized by Norges Gullsmedforbund (Norwegian Goldsmith organization) in 1962. Documented in the Norwegian magazine Gullsmedkunst, 1963 (see last photo). Excellent condition. Few signs of wear. Closure in good working order, with roll-over safety catch. David-Andersen AS (D-A) is a Norwegian jeweler company, the best known & with a reputation for high quality design & craftsmanship. It was established as a workshop in 1876 by jeweler David Andersen. Jewelry pieces from D-A are very popular collectibles. Bjørn Sigurd Østern worked for the company from early 1960s to mid - 1980s. Studying at the National College of Art & Design (NCAD) 1956-61, Østern was awarded 'Best Student'. He spent 1963 in the US on a scholarship from the diamond company 'de Beers Consolidated Mines' & helt exhibitions in New York in 1964 & 1965. Østern & Harry Sørby, who had been working for David-Andersen since 1929, were the leading designers of the company in the sixties & seventies, contributing to a new & modern look that continued the company's already strong tradition of Scandinavian Design.
