Annette Benning brilliantly portrays Lester's wife Carol Burnam, she can't seem to sell any real estate even though her peppy upbeat outlook "Projects an image of success at all times!" The supporting cast is incredible too with Thora Birtch as their daughter Janie, a brooding Wes Bentley as Ricky "The Boy Next Door" & Mena Suvari as Janie's best friend & Lester's inspiration to remaster & renovate his life. Possibly the most stunning performance is given by Allison Janney who played Barbara Fits, Ricky's mom. The layers & complexity of this closely observed character are breathtaking. From the writing & direction to the brilliant cinematography by Conrad Hall, this movie deserved its eight Oscar nominations at the 72nd Academy Awards.
