A wonderful piece of millinery memorabilia here- a miniature top hat in its original hatbox that was meant to be given as a gift. The owner would then use it to purchase the hat of their wishes, acting as a gift certificate. (This is what I've recently found... I too used to think these were salesman's samples or toothpick holders!) It's made of glazed & then painted ceramic. As you can see, some of the paint has 'melted' down over the black band, leaving the grey glaze exposed. The hat measures approximately 2" tall, 3.75" from front to back edge of the brim. The hatbox is about 2.75" tall & almost 4.25" at widest point (front to back) of lid. "Cavanagh" & the coat of arms is stamped inside the hat with a brown band painted around the inside as a headband. Hatbox is black with gold trim & markings: Cavanagh Hats New York. As shown, the hat has flea bites & the aforementioned paint issue. The hatbox is rough around the edges & has some surface loss to its shiny black. Overall in Fair condition.
