The Great Lakes are comprised of five lakes - Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, & Ontario. Together they combine to form the largest group of freshwater lakes on earth. This three dimensional wood relief map carving captures the natural beauty of the topography, coastline & the water depths of The Great Lakes. A blue epoxy pour highlights the depths of the lakes, with the epoxy growing darker as the depths increase. To ensure the accuracy of this wooden map carving, the 3D elevation data is obtained from the USGS, converted into a 3D model, & then carved from Baltic Birch with a Walnut Veneer on a cnc router. Fine details are then carved by hand, after which the map is sanded & a hand rubbed finish is applied. A pocket is carved into the back of the piece allowing it to be hung on any wall in your home or camp. This piece is certain to become the focal point of any room in which it is displayed.
