New Netherlands leader Peter Stuyvesant appointed four men to act as "fire wardens" in New Amsterdam - now known as New York City. The wardens inspected chimneys & administered fines to people who had not kept their chimneys swept clear to prevent fires. The money gained from the fines was used to purchase fire-fighting equipment such as ladders & buckets. Genuine US stamps with original gum as issued by the Post Office. These stamps are genuine & valid to use as postage for current mailing. Be sure to use enough total postage to meet the current postage rate for mailing a letter if you want to use them for mailing.
