Description

Elaborate ink drawing on heavy textured paper by William Glen Davis, Pennsylvania Artist known for his avant garde modernist designs, working in ink, watercolor, & sculpture, often in the Brutalist style, some works highly surreal, as is the case with this wonderful drawing of an intriguing figure. Measures 25 1/4' x 19". Davis was an early member of a group of Pittsburgh artists working in abstract styles, exploring surrealist styles & supporting the most interesting of modernist works of the era. in New york in the 1940's he studied with Amedee Ozanfant (French 1886-1966), a powerful influence in the realm of modern & surrealist art, & his drawings such as this clearly depict the influence of Ozanfant. Davis was a contributor to an important exhibition of Abstract & Surrealist American Art at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1947. Though undated, this work likely was created in the 1940's or 1950's. Much of his later works had moved entirely into abstract forms. The work is beautifully drawn, all in ink with fine detail & striking composition, darkened areas that contrast with the fine lines & white background. Note the figure that is depicted in the leg of the main figure. The entire surface of the paper is filled with detail, & it is a wonder of artistic excellence. Please note that the photos are a bit dark, the background in them looks a bit grey, but it is a clear creamy white. Signed in lower left corner, there is a sketch of a face on the back. Condition is good, no tears, stains or fading, very slight signs of wear, slight creases, will even out when framed. Unframed, would be stunning in proper mat & frame. Please see all photos for details & email any questions. Shipping via USPS or Fedex with tracking & insurance. Will be shipped rolled. Shipping delays may occur.
