MacGregor Jr. USS Portland LPD-27 is a San Antonio class amphibious transport dock ship & the second ship to be named after the city of Portland Oregon. There have been three ship's named USS Portland & the USS Portland LPD-27 is the second named after the city of Portland, Oregon. The first Portland ship CL-CA-33 was named for Portland, Maine, commissioned Feb 1933 & decommissioned July 1946. The second USS Portland LSD-37 named after Portland, Oregon was commissioned Oct 1970 & de-commissioned August 2003. The USS Portland LPD-27 is eleventh of 13 ships in her class. She was built by Ingalls shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi & commissioned December 2017. A San Antonio class ship's mission is to transport US Marine troops, equipment & vehicles into a war zone using air-cushion landing craft (LCAC), other land craft, MV-22 Osprey's & helicopters. The USS Portland LPD-27's homeport is the San Diego Naval Base. The ship's motto is "First responders, brave & determined". - ORIGINAL Nautical chart art painting of the USS Portland LPD-27. Many of his family members were self-taught artists, woodcarvers, automobile mechanics & veterans of foreign wars including his father a WW1 veteran. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, & Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military & aerospace companies in industrial engineering & IR optics. His painting incorporates "old skool" mechanical & civil drafting tools & he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics & inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them. He is frequently commissioned by United States Naval officers to create paintings of their ships & aircraft carriers on nautical charts. in May, 2018, & for one year, four of Bill's automotive related paintings were on display at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA.
