☾ Cerrunos Prayer Beads ☾ Cernunnos was the Celtic god of forests, fertility, prosperity, wild animals & wild places. He is often seen as a mysterious horned figure often surrounded by animals who rules over the wilderness & brings natural enemies together in peace. He is typically attributed to his roles as a peace maker, protecter & provider. Cernunnos was an ancient Gaelic word meaning "horned" or "horned one." Little is known of Cernunnos, for almost nothing was written about him, as was the common way of oral teachings of the ancients. He was known as a god of the wild & often appeared as a bearded man with antlers in artifacts left behind. Cernunnos was worshipped primarily in Britain, although there are also traces of his cult in Ireland. The Christian church strongly opposed him because of his powerful pagan influence. Cernunnos' worship as a major god & his depiction with horns may well have been one of the inspirations for the imagery associated with the figure of Satan in the Christian religion. He was used as a symbol of the Antichrist & as such figured in Christian iconography & medieval manuscripts. in contemporary scholarship, Cernunnos has become a name used for other Celtic horned gods whose names have been lost to history. There is little evidence to suggest that the name Cernunnos was used outside of Gaul. Nevertheless, academic & religious scholars alike have used the name as a kind of catch-all for Celtic horned gods, as well as horned deities as far afield as India. He is symbolically represented by the stag, along with a flurry of other animals, ranging from bulls, boars to rats & dogs.
