Unlike the previous film, it takes place in the present rather than in a future dystopian society. Rollerball was released on August 2, 2002. Upon its release, the film received negative reviews, & was criticized for the lack of the social critique that was in the original film. It was a box office bomb, it grossed $25 million against production budget of $70 million.
