Description

This antique carpenter's scribe probably dates to the second half of the 19th century. It's a great old hand tool, & is probably hand-made. There is absolutely no brass on it - it's entirely made of wood (other than the tiny scribing pin). The screw looks like it could be walnut to me, but I'm not a wood expert (though I do have lots of walnut furniture from the 1860s-1880s). The shaft is 8 3/8" long & is 5/8" square. The screw is 7/8" in diameter, & the block is 2 1/4" x 1 3/4". Everything is true-dimension of course. There is a remnant of the tiny metal pin used for the scribing itself. I don't believe this is a mortise gauge, since those usually have two pins - it's a 'regular' marking gauge. You can use this to scribe your dovetail shoulder lines or tenons, or to mark any piece of wood that you need a consistent depth. Or this would just be a great decorative piece in a "country" workshop, sitting room, or on a shelf in an old house! People seem to try to sell similar scribes for $35 or even $40 (or more). Mine (as usual) is priced to sell. They're not super-rare, after all! Free pickup is available in Geneva, IL. If shipped, I will send it through USPS, with a tracking number. Remember that all orders totaling $35 or more qualify for free shipping - consider combining this with another vintage or antique item to reach that threshold. Thanks for looking!
